Ninth University of Alabama System Scholars Institute Brings Back Memories

HUNTSVILLE, Ala.–  Dozens of faculty, staff and administrators from the three institutions within the University of Alabama System are gathering here in The Rocket City today for the Ninth University of Alabama System Scholars Institute.

This will be my third such Institute here in the UA-Huntsville campus.  I have attended at least six of the nine gatherings.  The event always comes right as we as faculty are re-grouping for the summer months.

It is one of the rare opportunities for those of us in Tuscaloosa get to meet with our colleagues from the other two campuses in the system.

The event rotates between the three schools.

Here's the team that presented in 2015 at the 8th Institute at University of Alabama at Birmingham.

One Year Ago

Last year, I attended my first Institute in Birmingham (having gone to several in Tuscaloosa and Huntsville).  My colleagues from journalism– Meredith Cummings and Pat Duggins — co-presented on our experience teaching in the new Digital Media Center.

At the 2015 Institute, my colleague Meredith Cummings gave her experience teaching a newly revised journalism editing class in the WVUA-23 Newsroom.

It was the first time that those of us on the journalism faculty had made a public presentation on our work in the Digital Media Center.    This presentation was also different in that we also included a student on our team.

The Most Memorable of Updates from the Scholars Institute

I can’t believe it’s been FIVE YEARS since we hosted this particular Institute in the wake of the April 27th tornado, which devastated parts of Tuscaloosa.  Not only did we have a very successful University of Alabama System Scholars Institute, but we also have recovered well from the tornado.    I have to admit, I enjoyed previewing it all on video.
